After a 10-month refit overseen by Deirdre Renniers, interior designer of the Aman private yacht Amandira, Dunia Baru is setting sail once more across Southeast Asia’s archipelagos.
The 51m, two-masted luxury phinisi Dunia Baru (Indonesian for ‘the new world’) is the grande dame of luxury Indonesian phinisis. Under her new Singaporean owners Jing-Yi Wee and her brother Teng Yuan Wee, she has been handcrafted in the classic architecture of phinisi wooden sailboats by the Konjo, an ancient tribe of boat builders in South Sulawesi.
Only the best and longest pieces of ulin ironwood were selected for Dunia Baru – wood that is now protected and can no longer be procured. “It’s simply no longer possible to build another boat like Dunia Baru,” says Jing-Yi. “She was built with love and without compromise over eight years.”
