Charity supporting the Home of Loving Faithfulness runs dangerously low on funds
The San Fernando Race Foundation, a Hong Kong registered charity, is appealing for support in this difficult time to help its beneficiary, the Home of Loving Faithfulness in San Fernando, Luzon Island, in the Philippines.
The care home supports 32 children from underprivileged families who are unable to care for their children. Once a child is accepted, the child and parents sign an agreement that the child will do their best during their tenure, normally until they leave college.
The foundation was established and supported by sailors participating in the discontinued San Fernando Race, a 480-nautical mile, Category 1 Offshore Race from Hong Kong to San Fernando, Philippines.
The race, which ran from 1977 to 2017, was a legendary fixture among Hong Kong’s blue water offshore yacht races. It was replaced by a new event, the bi-annual Hong Kong to Puerto Galera Yacht Race, organised by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club for the first time in April 2019.
Since then, support for the foundation has fallen considerably, reports Colin Dawson, who is spearheading fundraising efforts. He notes that a small group of people are administering the home and visiting families to make sure that local families’ needs are being met.
In a statement, the foundation said annual operational costs amount to around HK$380,000 (US$50,000) per year or HK$30 per recipient, per day. There are also maintenance projects in need of funding, such as a need for a new roof, guttering, internal flooring, new motor for the well and a renovation of the kitchen.
