Clipper Race Announces Four-Year Deal with Sanya, China

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race has announced a landmark partnership with Sanya, China, making the rapidly growing resort and sailing hub on Hainan Island a key player for the next two editions of the race. This historic four-year agreement was signed on February 15, 2017, solidifying Sanya’s role as both a Team Partner and Host Port for the 2017-18 and 2019-20 races.

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, founder of the Clipper Race, expressed his enthusiasm at the press conference in Sanya Serenity Marina, a world-class facility where the fleet will dock. “I am very pleased to welcome Sanya as a Host Port and Team Partner,” he remarked. “This is a beautiful resort in the south of China, with excellent marina facilities and a strong sailing heritage. We’re excited to showcase Sanya’s name on our team yacht as it sails across the globe, promoting this incredible destination.”

Strengthening Sanya’s International Sailing Profile

The contract was signed with full support from Sanya’s Mayor, Mr. Wu Yanjun, who highlighted the positive impact on the city’s international image. “The Clipper Race partnership supports our strategy to boost Sanya’s profile as a global sailing destination,” the mayor stated. “We’re eager to welcome the Clipper Race’s crew, supporters, and guests, as they experience the city’s blend of sports, tourism, and investment opportunities.”

Benefits of the Partnership for Sanya:

  1. Boosts Sanya’s visibility as a leading international sailing destination.
  2. Promotes tourism and economic growth, welcoming visitors from around the globe.
  3. Advances Sanya’s long-term plan to combine sports and tourism.

In line with Sanya’s vision, the city will be represented by a dedicated yacht, aptly named “Sanya,” which will carry an international crew – including local sailors – as they compete in the Clipper Race. This team is expected to arrive in Sanya as part of the Asia-Pacific Leg in early 2018 and will return in 2020, bringing additional tourism, trade, and media attention.

Sanya’s Evolution into a Premier Sailing Hub

Sanya’s recent years have seen a strong focus on developing a solid sailing infrastructure and hosting international regattas. Drawing inspiration from Qingdao, China’s first Clipper Race host, Sanya aims to mirror the success Qingdao achieved through consistent participation since 2005. Qingdao has cultivated an active sailing culture, enhanced its economic landscape, and raised its global presence as a prominent sailing destination.

Sanya’s collaboration with the Clipper Race aligns with its strategy to strengthen its sports-tourism combination, making the city an increasingly attractive destination for travelers seeking both relaxation and adventure.
