Delta Marina, which facilities yacht mooring services in Hei Ling Chau typhoon shelter, has announced the delivery of its Express Ferry, built by Kingship. The new boat marks an important milestone in the development of Delta’s service, first announced in June 2021. There is no road access to Hei Ling Chau and no direct ferry link between the typhoon shelter and Central.

Hong Kong is badly short of suitable marinas and berthing spaces for yachts, so Delta was founded by long-time yacht industry veteran Bart Kimman to address the shortage. Delta has permission from the Hong Kong Marine Department to lay down 600 fore-and-aft moorings in Hei Ling Chau typhoon shelter, which has long sat disused by the government or private individuals, due to its isolation. Delta Marina is currently offering discounted annual subscriptions based on six-year lease terms that are approved directly by the Marine Department.

The new Express Ferry will connect owners, guests and crew in Central or Aberdeen with the yachts moored in Hei Ling Chau by Delta Marina. In the announcement, Delta Marina added that the new ferry is available for charters and on-demand, point-to-point trips as the company “gradually commences regular trips to and from Hei Ling Chau.” Inquiries are welcome.

Hong Kong’s Cruising Owner’s Association (COA) has chartered the Express Ferry for their quarterly owner’s cruise to the Soko Islands, with an overnight stay in Delta Marina. On-demand ferry service for up to 16 members will provided over the weekend.

The Express Ferry features a flattened bow with high railings, which makes boarding and offloading passengers safe from any of Hong Kong’s piers and moorings. There is seating for up to 22 guests, protected by a sizeable hard top. Delta estimates that travel time between Aberdeen and Hei Ling Chau is 15 minutes.

Delta Marina is also looking for a new marina manager. The company is building a barge to be based at Hei Ling Chau typhoon shelter. The barge will house personnel to manage and secure the yachts in the typhoon shelter. CVs can be sent directly to Bart Kimman at  bartkim@yachtstrategies.com
