Auckland Boat Show

The New Zealand Marine Industry Association (MIA) has announced the Auckland Boat Show is set to go ahead from March 17-20, 2022, after the 2020 and 2021 editions of the show were cancelled due to Covid restrictions.

“New Zealand’s longest-standing on water-based boat show was scheduled to open on 7th October, 2021, but with uncertainty on which restriction levels will be in force at that time, we have made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s show,” organiser Stacey Cook said in September, two weeks before the 2021 edition of the show had been due to start.

“Looking ahead to 2022 and future years, the NZ Marine Board of Management has approved the Boat Show Policy Committee’s recommendation to move the show back to its original March date,” Garry Lock, president of the New Zealand MIA, told IBI News.

Lock added that moving the date back to March in 2022 would be subject to the MIA gaining a suitable show venue within the Viaduct Harbour/Quay St area in time.

“The only reason we moved from our original March date several years ago was due to the show venue not being available due to the then Volvo Ocean Race utilising all the available space,” Lock added. “A show in March also provides us the great opportunity to promote boating as a lifestyle.”

March is late summer in New Zealand, and this period is seen as a good time to capitalise on the warmer weather, as well as offering enough lead time for exhibitors to fulfil any orders taken at the show.

A recent expansion of the Viaduct Harbour includes a new marina and buildings for the Prada Cup and America’s Cup.
